You drop behind the edge of the hollow moments before the clansman’s bullets tear into the earth. Then you hear the chatter of Kate’s gun, and suddenly there is silence. Cautiously you raise your head and see the clansman’s body tumbling backwards down the slope. The sight of his death sends a shock wave through his confederates, and at once their attack falters. Encouraged by their sudden change of heart, you watch as they fall back towards their trucks, which are parked in the centre of the freeway.
