The guard becomes agitated and you sense at once that you have given him the wrong answer. ‘Don’t move a muscle!’ he growls, and he presses the tip of his spear to your throat. His comrade reaches to the parapet bell and he rings it once. Moments later, a troop of guards emerges from the doorway opposite the bridge. They are the same soldiers who, only a few minutes earlier, escorted away the unfortunate herald whose map and wristband you stole.

‘Lock ’im up!’ bellows the bridge guard, and he removes his spear from your throat as the soldiers come running towards you with their swords drawn.
